Chapter 589 Slaying Generals and Seizing the Flag 2
Chapter 589 Slaying Generals and Seizing the Flag 2
The red light on the battle flag went out completely.
Myriad phenomena guide the heavens.
The fifth skill wasn't Star Ray, but Universal Pull. An invisible energy wave exploded within the elite orc's body; the energy wasn't injected from the outside, but detonated directly inside its chest cavity.
The sound of ruptured internal organs came from inside the wound, muffled, like crushing a piece of fruit. A large amount of dark red blood gushed from the elite orc's mouth, mixed with bits of flesh and bone.
Its body stiffened. The warhammer slipped from its hand and struck its feet with a dull thud. Then its knees bent, its body slowly leaned forward, and finally it knelt on the ground.
It wasn't dead yet. The elite orc's health bar had only a sliver left; the health on the panel was so low it was almost invisible. It knelt on the ground, using its last bit of strength to raise its head, its blood-red eyes fixed on Lin Tian.
It tried to say something, but only the sound of blood bubbles churning in its throat could be heard.
Lin Tian raised his hand, grasped the blood-stained battle flag on its helmet, and pulled it out sharply. The flagpole was made of cast iron and inserted into a slot at the top of the helmet. When it was pulled out, it brought out a string of sparks and a few broken hairs.
Then he turned around, grasped the battle flag, and raised it high toward the city wall.
A golden beam shot from the top of the battle flag, piercing the morning mist and exploding into a striking signal against the gray sky. All the defenders saw the light.
Fang Ping stood by the crenellations of the city wall, held his breath for three seconds, and then burst into a deafening roar: "The battle flag has been captured! Lin Tian has captured the Black Stone Tribe's battle flag!"
The entire city wall defense line fell silent for a second. Then, all the garrison soldiers who could still move raised their weapons. Warriors clashed their swords and shields together, archers drew their bows and fired arrows into the sky, mages raised their staffs high, and even the wounded who had just been bandaged got up from the ground.
Cheers erupted from the city walls, wave after wave of sound.
Outside the city walls, the orcish central army formation was crumbling.
The loss of the battle banner is a fatal blow to the morale of the orc army—not only because the banner is a symbol of the attacker's morale, but also because the shamanic buffs attached to the banner disappear at the same time.
The orc infantry, who had been buffed, were instantly reduced to their original state. The effects of Bloodrage faded, their speed and strength plummeted, and the green light on their bodies went out as if electricity had been cut off.
The wolf riders were the first to turn tail and run. They circled twice on the spot, then suddenly bolted north, the orcs on their backs unable to hold them back. Next came the slingers—who had been hiding at the very back, seeing the infantry in front begin to retreat, they threw down their stones and ran without a word.
Fang Ping led his patrol out from the east side of the city wall, slashing down two slow-moving orc soldiers with a single blow. He looked up and saw Lin Tian still standing in the square in front of the city gate. Behind him was the shattered city gate, and in front of him were countless orc corpses. In his hand, he clutched the blood-stained battle flag.
Fang Ping slung his twin swords over his shoulder and shouted at him from afar, "Don't you know what it means to be low-key?"
Lin Tian did not answer. He put the battle flag into his backpack and turned to look at the head of the orc elite on the ground.
The creature was still kneeling on the ground, lifeless. An elite level 82, from the start of the fight to its fall, it took less than the time it takes to brew a cup of tea.
Little White flew down from the city wall and landed on Lin Tian's shoulder, its icy blue scales shimmering coldly in the morning light. It nuzzled Lin Tian's neck with its forked horn and let out a triumphant cry. Celia emerged from Lin Tian's shadow and stood silently behind him, her black robes fluttering without wind, and shadow energy flickering slightly at her fingertips.
Half an hour later, Colin delivered the complete report of the battle to the city lord's mansion.
The city lord sat behind the long table, looking down at the contents of the crystal tablet. The report was short, listing only a few key data points: a single person killed the standard-bearer, captured the flag, causing the orcs' morale to collapse and forcing a full-scale retreat. It included Fang Ping's testimony and a joint recommendation from the city gate guards.
After reading the report, the city lord raised his hand and tapped the crystal plate on the table twice.
"You haven't finished processing the data he reported yesterday, and here comes another one today." Her voice was hoarse and calm, but her lips twitched almost imperceptibly. "Pass on my order—Lin Tian, a new recruit in the Third Garrison, is to be transferred to the direct command of the Central Army immediately, with a promotion of one rank. Also, send a copy of the report on the capture of the flag to the Allied Command; this achievement will be credited to Juxia City."
As the messenger left with the order, the city lord added a final sentence.
"Oh, right—tell him to come to the city lord's mansion tomorrow, and I will personally confer the medal upon him."
Colin stood before the city lord, his eyes flickering slightly upon hearing those words. He knew all too well that for a new recruit to be personally awarded a medal by the city lord on his second day of service was unprecedented in the nearly ten-year history of Juxia City.
......
morning.
The sky over the Great Gorge City was still a hazy gray, with the muffled sound of artillery fire faintly heard in the distance—it was routine fire suppression on the northern front. The frequency of artillery fire had decreased considerably in the past two days after the orcs withdrew, but it had never completely stopped.
Lin Tian stood at the entrance of the city lord's mansion.
The copper nails on the ironwood gate gleamed coldly in the morning light, and the plaque above the lintel that read "Lord of the Great Gorge City" was missing a corner—not because it had fallen into disrepair over the years, but because it had been blown off by a shard of a stone projectile during the last orc siege. The city lord hadn't ordered it repaired, saying he would keep it as a memento.
"You've arrived." Colin walked out from inside the door, still wearing that silver-white plate armor, the scars on his face particularly noticeable in the morning light. "The city lord is waiting for you."
Lin Tian followed Colin through the porch.
Unlike the koi fish fountain in the Star Moon City Lord's Mansion, the courtyard of the Giant Gorge City Lord's Mansion only has a dead tree in the center, with several fragments of orc siege hammers embedded in its trunk. It is unclear whether they were left there intentionally or because there was no time to clean them up.
Several administrative NPCs hurriedly walked through the corridor carrying crystal tablets, without even glancing at Lin Tian—not because they didn't care, but because they were too busy.
The doors to the council chamber were open.
Qin Zhi sat behind the long table, in the same spot as last time. In front of her lay a troop deployment map of the northern border defense line, densely marked with the unit numbers and current status of each garrison. She looked up, saw Lin Tian, and pushed the map aside.
"I'm here." Qin Zhi's voice was still hoarse, as if she had a mouthful of sand in it.
"Lord of the City." Lin Tian stopped.
Qin Zhi glanced at him.
She reached out and picked up a badge from the table. It was made of iron, with a soaring eagle on the front and the words "Central Army Directly Subordinate - Lin Tian" engraved on the back.
"Lin Tian, a new recruit in the Third Garrison, is hereby transferred to the direct command of the Central Army, effective immediately." Qin Zhi's tone was very formal, as if she were reading out a military order. "His military rank is promoted one level, but his independent action authority is temporarily suspended. Specific tasks will be directly assigned by Colin."
She paused for a moment, then handed over the badge.
